Artist Statement

Abstract Work

Michael Trujillo follows his own intuition to create canvases of remarkable sophistication and mystery. His viewer is pulled toward the paintings as they fine veiled images within the layers of paint and textures he uses so expertly. Mystery is most often Trujillo’s motivation while working.

From the beginning, the use of color will direct and motivate the artist. At some point, his experience, technique and intuition will take over to bring the canvas to fruition. He prefers the fast, expressionistic strokes, he uses wet on wet paint mixed with water to create his fluidity and motion, and he draws and scratches onto the surface of the painting. He even throws or slings paint at the canvas.

The artist succeeds in the expression of mystery, exuberance and elusiveness into which each viewer brings his own experience and reality.

“Art is my life, my reason for being.” - Michael Trujillo.

Sensuality Work

In this body of work Michael Trujillo touches upon a subject that many people view as a taboo. Sexuality has always been something that is not openly talked about. Michael’s goal is to show the sensual side of sex as well as side by side with it’s raw emotion and physicality. He is not interested in showing the actual act of the penetration, but the aspect that most people don’t pay so much attention to, which is the sensuality of the sex act and it’s raw power and emotion. He is not looking to be rude, raunchy, or disgusting with his pieces as he doesn’t want the viewer to turn their heads and feel an aversion by what they see. He wants the viewer to connect with what he is showing. If you have made love, his body of work should take you back to that experience and emotions that were felt. He wants the viewer to get aroused at what they are looking at. By the time they are done experiencing and viewing his work they should walk away in an aroused state of mind and as such, should go home and have a very pleasing and satisfying night.
